Seasonal Advice Autumn 2011
Seasons come and seasons go, with the start of a new academec year - new schools, classes and teachers, the beginning of university or even a job move - they all come with a sense of change. The season of Autum also brings warmer clothes and an eye on our health for all that adjustment.
New schools: children often find it difficult to move from the security of their old school to a completely new one. The transition from junior to senior school can often provoke insecure feelings in children. Leaving old friends, teachers and familiar surroundings can be a daunting thought for them. Homoeopathic remedies can help children work through these changes and enable them to cope better. Being bullied is sadly an all too familiar situation in schools, where not only the victim but also the bully needs help. Again, Homoeopathy can address these issues in an environment where children will feel supported, safe and listened to. Any prolonged anxiety will have an immune system impact and lead to lowered energy with a variety of physical ailments. Whilst good food and enough sleep are important, children may often get things mentally way out of proportion. The unprejudiced observation of a Homoeopath can have the ability to throw light on what might seem an insurmountable problem for a child, causing insomnia, possible repeated colds and coughs, unexplained fevers and glandular problems.
Immune boosters: a course of echinacea at the first signs of over-tiredness should give our systems a welcome boost to ward off an unwanted cold or ‘flu. Echinacea is a well-known product now and can be bought in child friendly form such as coloured fizzy water or pastilles. Kindervital tonic for children is a more palatable form of Floridix, the excellent natural immune booser for adults and children. There is now also a good variety of natural berry juices on the market, Biona being a quality, trusted brand. Elderberry juice is proven to be particularly high in anti-oxidants and there are plenty around for the picking in our hedge-rows right now, if you feel inclined to make your very own!
Arnica: the number one Homoeopathic remedy with far more therapeutic qualities than just helping with bumps and bruises. Any over-exertion will benefit from a dose or two of Arnica in a 6C or 30C potency - for over-walking, the enthusiastic gardener, even too much housework! It can usually re-vitalise your system from the odd sleepless night as well, whilst chronic sleep loss needs to be addressed by a Homoeopath.
Colds: at the first sign of a cold it is worth taking Arsenicum Alb. 6C every 2-3 hours for up to six doses -often this will be enough to stop the symptoms developing. Aconite is a more appropriate remedy if you have been exposed to windy weather. And remember, it’s best not to overload your system with food; instead, up your fluid intake with fresh fruit and vegetable juices. Home-made onion soup is also excellent for promoting the body’s de-toxification process. A cold is a natural process which needs to be encouraged and not suppressed. It is a sign that the body needs to rest and recover. There are various Homoeopathic tissue salts which will also support nasal discharges: Kali Sulph 6x for yellow, Kali Mur 6X for white and Nat Mur 6X for clear. Your chosen tissue salt can also be alternated with Ferrum Phos 6X which is another excellent remedy for the early inflammatory stages of a cold or it can be used on its own. The body never lies and a cold is telling you TO REST!!
